Indianapolis - The Phoenix Theatre of Indianapolis announces the opening of the Tony Award-nominated and Drama Desk Award-winning Next Fall by Geoffrey Nauffts. This witty and provocative urban romance won the Outer Critics Circle Award for Outstanding New Broadway Play opens Thursday, June 7th on the Livia and Steve Russell Mainstage at the Phoenix.
Next Fall is about two gay men, Adam and Luke, who are in a five-year relationship and are committed to make it work despite their differences. When an accident changes everything, Adam must turn to Luke's family for support and answers. This modern romance places current debates in a human context by examining who is truly our "family", what it means to "believe" in this day and age, and what it might cost us not to.
"Next Fall paints a beautiful and funny portrait of modern romance, asking the hard questions about commitment, love, and faith," says director and Phoenix Theatre founding member Charles Goad. "The Phoenix has a way of bringing topics from today’s headlines to the stage and Next Fall is no exception."
"I had many people tell me that Next Fall was a Phoenix show. When I read the script, I had to agree. Not only is it an exceptionally well-written script, it also confronts the very timely and provocative issue of gay marriage," says Phoenix Producing Director Bryan Fonseca. "At the center of this production is the topic of who is considered ‘family’ in a modern relationship," says Fonseca. "Not only is this a much-discussed topic, it may very well be the issue that decides the upcoming Presidential election."
The New York Times called the original Broadway production "Artful, thoughtful and very moving…" The Los Angeles Times described Next Fall as "Humorous, absorbing, often amusing and ultimately touching
