Indianapolis - Jericho, a play by Jack Canfora, opened to rave reviews on October 28 in the Phoenix's Basile Theatre. The prodcution is a National New Play Network (NNPN) Rolling World Premiere. Winner of the Edgerton New American Play Award, Jericho opened at New Jersey Repertory Company in September and will open at Florida Studio Theatre in Sarasota later this year.
Set in Manhattan and its suburbs around Thanksgiving, Jericho is a thought-provoking comic-drama that explores how people cope with collective and personal tragedy. Canfora's characters are touchingly human, struggling to learn what it means to belong to another person and to a larger community, all while figuring out how to meet their own needs. With surprising humor, Jericho undertakes some of the larger and more troubling questions of American life without forgetting all struggles, even political ones, are ultimately personal.
Bryan Fonseca, Phoenix Theatre Producing Director and Jericho director, says “I first heard Jericho when it was selected to be read at the National New Play Network Showcase of New Plays in Denver, Colorado in December of last year. I was struck with how the play deals in a sharp and witty way with the process of grief, forgiveness and healing, as well as with where we are as a country on the 10th anniversary of the 9/11 tragedy.”
